Autumn in Athens

Athens has a mild and reasonably dry autumn, as you can see from this picture, taken on 1st October at Syntagma Square in the centre of Athens.

The building in the background houses the Greek Parliament. It was built in 1840 under King Otto and served as the royal palace until 1910, when it was destroyed by fire. It reopened in 1935 as the seat of the National Assembly.

Is it where the guards with the kilt are? My son get crazy at them, I thought they were going to shoot him on the place (he was a kid).

Yep, the change of the guards takes place in front of this very building.

I'm sure they'd never shoot anyone, I know they have to wear skirts and tights, but they're just regular guys in reality ;-)

I am quite tall, but I remember they were much taller than average. Are they selected for height as our 'Granatieri'?

Now you really get me excited as I am going to Athens together with my wife in two weeks - so thanks for the appetizer! :-)

@ Vogon Poet: Yep, they're selected for height and posture as they have to be able to stand very still and straight for hours on end - and look good in a mini skirt (poor guys)!

@ RennyBA's Terella: Lucky you :-) I hope you get lovely weather. There are more Athens photos under the relevant label.

Don't hesitate to ask if you need any help with anything!

Beautiful light on the Parliament!

You know, it's the light that made me stop and take this photo. I'm glad you've noticed it :-)
